"There is so much to examine and marvel about the natural world when simply taking the time to really SEE. This is what Christine teaches in this sketching challenge. Her talent, knowledge of the drawing subjects, and her infectious enthusiasm makes each session so much fun. Thank you, Christine!"

- Anke Roth

"Taking Christine's course pushed me to do things on a deadline. Her techniques helped, especially watching her do them first. And it was reassuring to see that some of her sketches were not 100% "accurate" to the original object either!!! Variation is fine! And the finished product looks great - even if it's not a "photocopy" of the original. I think I get too hung up on "it's not right" - I'm learning that "it's fine" works, too. Thank you, Christine, for putting this course together!

- Ellen Rathbone

"Christine helped me to become more confident and excited about drawing. As a big-picture ecologist, I’ve thoroughly loved getting back into the habit of slowing down and focusing on the smaller details. I feel like I’ve become a better artist AND a better biologist! Plus, Christine’s videos are very approachable, educational, and fun!"

Christine Elder
Christine Elder

I’ve been drawing and painting nature all my life and love sharing the joy I experience when I’m in the field with students.

As a former classroom teacher, I know how to lead students in a logical, step by step progression, giving them the knowledge to proceed with skill and confidence.

My advanced degrees in both biology and scientific illustration inform my work and teaching style.

I travel regularly, sketching the flora and fauna I encounter and teaching workshops to both adults and youth in such diverse places as Mexico, Honduras, Jamaica, Panama, and the United States.

I make my home in central Oregon, on the eastern slope of the volcanic Cascades mountain range, where the pine forests meet the sage steppe.

When not teaching, I enjoy hiking, bird watching and horseback riding.

STUDENT TESTIMONIAL

"Following the Nature Journal Challenge with Christine is a very enriching experience. She shares all her knowledge and spices this up with her own experiences of being in the field herself. And what I find really wonderful is that she leads students into drawing the subjects, step by step. Everyone can easily follow her precise and clear examples too."
