New and Old World Sparrow Families Passerellidae/Passeridae

Sparrow Families Workshop

In this workshop, you'll learn all about two common sparrow families; the so-called Old World Sparrows (Passeridae), which includes the ubiquitous House Sparrow, and the New World Sparrows (Passerellidae) such as the Spotted Towhee, Dark-eyed Junco, and Chipping Sparrow.

Both families are diverse and cosmopolitan, and many can be seen at backyard feeders and suburban parks.

We'll touch upon their biology, global diversity, and especially their similar anatomy to help us sketch them more accurately.

Lastly, I'll lead you through a step-by-step drawing tutorial of the Spotted Towhee.

> Please download the Spotted Towhee Sketching Cheat Sheet at the bottom of the page then watch the workshop. I've also included a bonus handout, the House Sparrow Reference Photos handout for extra practice.

We will be drawing the Spotted Towhee in the video below but I encourage you to try the more difficult House Sparrow (on page #1 of the second handout) as well for extra challenging practice!
